Square screen list

My Powkiddy RGB30 has shipped so I'm looking forward to the games I can put on it to take full advantage of that 1:1 aspect ratio screen.

The primary use case is Pico-8 and obviously the Gameboy / Gameboy color

The primary use case is Pico-8 and obviously the Gameboy/Gameboy color screens are close, but I'm delighted to discover that the Gamegear's aspect ratio is also 10:9, the Neogeo pocket is a 256x256 virtual screen and the may be a few other oddities floating around to explore 🙂.

Even if the Watara Supervision is no fun to play it'll surely feed into my Pico-8 development aspirations.

Classic consoles

There's obviously a raft of well-known AAA titles for GB and GBC that are still wbrth playing today. With my newfound cavalier attitude towards shovelling loads of crap onto these devices I'll probably be adding All The Games, so here's a list of ones I especially want to track down or try out:

Gameboy color

Gameboy

I'm less excited about the OG Gameboy, but who knows, it might feed into my PICO-8 aspirations.

Neogeo pocket (and pocket color)

Other than PICO-8 this is the system I'm most excited about as there seem to be some games on here that are genuinely worth playing.

Gamegear

I was never much into Gamegear. My sister had one when we were kids, for some reason, and it made little to no impression on me. Sonic's in that category of game that I just don't understand the fun of.

But it's got a square screen and that's why we're here, so I've been trying a few games out recently and I've found some brass in the muck.

Fantasy consoles

PICO-8

Lowres NX

I'd never heard of this before I started this exercise, but it looks like it could be fun to try out, at least.

Bullshit consoles

Right, here we go, into the bleak hinterlands of portable gaming's history.

I think I've found all the games for all the consoles with 1:1 screens (or thereabouts) that are supported by Emulationstation for the chipset used in the RGB30. And there's not a looker among them.

In my random tests I have found a couple of games that seem interesting in one way or another, though, so I'll note them down here for future study.

Even the worst of these games is going to be a challenge to re-implement in PICO-8, so I think it's worth doing.

Watara Supervision

Right, here we're getting into the hinterlands. I thought there might migh

Gamate

Hartung Game Master
