Week 16 2024

It feels weird to say that week including a funeral was good, and even weirder that some of the good things were precisely to do with the funeral, but here we are. I write this blog with the assumption that nobody reads it, but I can't be sure nobody reads it, so I'm not going to go into much detail, but from a personal perspective, it was… edifying? certainly a moving experience, at least.

Went through to Edinburgh for an in-person meeting of what increasingly feels like a real Design System Team. I still feel like we (ie everyone but me 😜) are not really convceiving the DS in a broad enough way. Everyone's too focused on the component library.

For example, we got usability / accessibility feedback from an outside agency and it said we should avoid PDF for a11y reasons. So I'm working on a proposal for a new microsite that generates reports as HTML pages. I'm thinking about how to use the DS to style this raw HTML and it's not super-clear how to do it without refactoring / duplicating loads of SCSS.

I'd be really keen to spin up an 11ty site as a PoC, but I already feel under pressure to use Nuxt instead. And as soon as Nuxt is in use, it becomes very tempting to try and render out library components instead. I am certain I will be returning to this topic to say "Called it!" at some point in the not-too-distant future.

UPDATE: Oops. Forgot to finish this on Sunday and now it's Tueday, so I suppose it's finished. Publish!
